Most leaders don't have a time problem. They have an availability problem.
Emails.Texts. Notifications. Meetings. Slack messages. Everyone wants access.
And for many professionals, being available has become the default.
The problem is that every interruption comes with a cost.
Not always in minutes.
But in attention.
Researchers call it attention residue—the mental drag that remains after switching from one task to another. You answer an email, jump into a meeting, check a notification, then try to return to focused work. Part of your attention never fully comes back.
The result?
More decision fatigue.
Less clarity.
Lower energy.
And slower progress on the work that matters most.
In aviation, distractions can be dangerous. Pilots use checklists, procedures, and communication protocols to reduce unnecessary noise and focus on the critical information that matters in the moment.
Leadership isn't much different.
The leaders creating the most momentum aren't always working harder.
They're protecting their attention.
They schedule focus before reacting.
They create boundaries before burnout.
They decide what matters before everyone else decides for them.
This has become one of my biggest lessons over the past year.
My calendar is no longer just a scheduling tool.
It's an energy management system.
Workouts are booked first.
Key projects are blocked in advance.
Writing, outreach, and strategic work all have dedicated space before the noise of the day takes over.
Because once your attention is fragmented, your energy usually follows.
One question I now include in my Daily Inspection is simple:
What’s creating drag right now?
Not my time.
My attention.
Because that's usually where momentum is leaking.
The goal isn't to be available to everyone.
The goal is to be fully present for what matters most.

Take a look at your calendar and notifications.
What is stealing your attention that no longer deserves access to it?
Protect your attention.
Protect your energy.
Momentum follows.
