When I look back over my career, every meaningful shift started with a conversation.

A mentor.

A recommendation.

A leader who opened a door.

Someone who believed in me before I fully believed in myself.

We often celebrate individual achievement.

The keynote speaker.

The CEO.

The entrepreneur.

The athlete crossing the finish line.

But behind almost every breakthrough is a community of people who helped make it possible.

The Power of Community

Last week, I had the privilege of speaking at a WIN networking event.

The room was filled with business owners, executives, sales professionals, nonprofit leaders, and entrepreneurs from completely different industries. On paper, they had very little in common.

Except for one thing.

They all understood the power of showing up for one another.

For more than 50 years, this community has gathered around breakfast tables to build relationships, share ideas, solve problems, and support each other's success.

Not because every meeting changes their business.

But because over time, every conversation has the potential to.

That's how momentum works.

It compounds.

No One Succeeds Alone

During my 14 years in aviation, people often assumed flying helicopters was a solo profession.

It wasn't.

Every successful flight depended on a team.

Aircraft maintenance engineers who ensured the helicopter was safe to fly.

Ground crews who prepared the aircraft.

Dispatchers monitoring weather and coordinating logistics.

Fuel crews.

Customers.

Instructors.

Mentors.

The pilot may have been the one holding the controls, but no mission was ever accomplished alone.

Leadership works the same way.

The strongest leaders don't build momentum by trying to have all the answers.

They build relationships.

They ask questions.

They seek different perspectives.

They invest in people long before they need something in return.

Relationships Create Momentum

Too often, we wait.

We wait until business slows before reaching out.

We wait until we're looking for a job before growing our network.

We wait until we're struggling before asking for help.

We wait until we feel ready before introducing ourselves to someone we admire.

Leadership isn't about waiting for the right moment.

It's about creating momentum through consistent action.

Sometimes that action is sending a message.

Making an introduction.

Showing up to breakfast.

Checking in with an old colleague.

Offering help before it's requested.

Small conversations have a remarkable way of becoming big opportunities.

Looking back, I can trace nearly every meaningful opportunity in my career to a relationship.

A conversation led to a mentor.

A mentor led to a new opportunity.

An opportunity led to a completely different direction.

None of it happened alone.

That's why community matters.

Not because someone else will build your future for you.

Because the right people have a way of helping you see possibilities you couldn't yet see yourself.

Momentum is personal.

But it's rarely built alone.

Have you thanked them?

And whose momentum could you help create this week?

But it might be the beginning of something that does.
