Last week, I had the opportunity to speak at the CPHR Saskatchewan 2025 Future Forward Conference in Saskatoon in front of 360+ HR leaders. An incredible event that brought together HR professionals, leaders, and change-makers from across CPHR Saskatchewan and beyond.
The theme of my keynote? Momentum Shift.
Fittingly, halfway through my presentation — about two-thirds in — my slide deck completely cut out. No visuals. No cues. Just me, a mic, and a room full of 360+ leaders…
And that’s where the message of Shift Happens really came to life. An exercise we focus on for the main call to action. With sticky notes and a real Shift Happens Wall for attendees to commit to and create their own shifts.
In work, leadership, and life, things don’t always go according to plan. The real test isn’t how perfect the plan was — it’s how well you can adapt when things shift unexpectedly.
With a background in high-stakes aviation, including helicopters, I’ve navigated this situation many times. Dealing with high pressure and stress in some of the most remote places on the planet.
So, I kept going. No slides. Just story, connection, and conversation. And honestly? It might’ve been one of the most authentic moments of the entire day because people can relate to when things don’t go to plan. Not only as leaders, but as humans.
Because when shift happens, it’s not about control — it’s about committing forward.
And this event was an extra special one because of the people involved. Getting to share the stage with my friends Jay Kiew from Change Fluency and Kevin Lim one-of-a-kind event emcee.
Change doesn’t ask for permission — but it always brings opportunity. Whether it’s a tech glitch, a team shakeup, or an unexpected career shift, the moment you keep going is the moment you lead.
